Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani 2, which opened in theatres on Friday, December 2, collected a decent amount on its opening day at the Indian box office. It has surpassed the opening day Indian box office collection of Kahaani (Rs 3 crore).
The film has managed to collect Rs 4.25 crore on its first day at the domestic market. "#Kahaani2 Fri ₹ 4.25 cr [1235 screens]. India biz... Picked up in evening/night shows," Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Released in 1235 screens all over India, it opened to an occupancy of around 15-20 percent in the morning shows, although it picked up in the evening shows. Single screens contributed the least in the business of the movie as compared to multiplexes from major cities.
The film was expected to do well at the box office as the first movie was well received. Also, Kahaani 2 got a solo release and had enough scope to draw the audience to the theatres on its opening day.
The demonetisation drive seems to have hit the collection to a certain extent, however, the negative word-of-mouth publicity is believed to be the reason for the average collection.
The plot of Kahaani 2 revolves around Vidya's character Durga Rani Singh, who is seen as a helpless mother looking for her kidnapped daughter. She is also portrayed as someone who is on the run and is charged for kidnapping and murder.
Produced by Kushal Kantilal Gada, Dhaval Jayantilal Gada, Aksshay Jayantilal Gada and Sujoy Ghosh, the film also stars Arjun Rampal in a key role.
