Rajinikanth's "Kabali," the biggest Tamil release in 2016, is now getting ready to complete its 50-day run in theatres. The Pa Ranjith-directorial was released in three languages (Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) on July 22 to a massive hype.
"Kabali" is reaching its 50-day run in theatres this week. The movie is still being played in selected screens in Tamil Nadu although it has been taken down from most of the domestic and international centres.
The film was released in over 4,500 screens worldwide in three languages. The multilingual movie had grossed Rs. 87.5 crore to become the biggest Indian opener. The film was opened to fairly positive reviews and garnered a better response from his previous other films like "Kochadaiiyaan" and "Lingaa," which turned out to be duds at the box office.
After getting an earth-shattering response, "Kabali" ended its first weekend by earning over massive Rs. 200 crore. However, the collections significantly dropped in the following days. As per the trade reports, the movie was a hit in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, while it failed to live up to the expectations in Karnataka. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the craze around the film fizzled out after the first weekend.
Overseas, "Kabali" was a big winner and it earned over Rs. 100 crore from international box office. It did well in the U.S., Malaysia and the U.K. While there is no official confirmation on the business done by the Rajinikanth-starrer, trade experts predict the film to have grossed over Rs. 350 crore.
"Kabali" is believed to be made with the budget of Rs. 100 crore. The film has earned about Rs. 225 crore from the sales of various rights and deals. The producer has earned good profits and many who associated with the flick have reportedly made decent money. It has to be noted that there have been no reports of distributors losing money like Rajinikanth's last two flicks. Hence, it is safe to declare that the film is a "hit" at the box office.
