Superstar Rajinikanth's "Kabali" has failed to break the five collection records of SS Rajamouli's "Baahubali: The Beginning" (also spelled as "Bahubali") at the worldwide box office.
Released in theatres on July 22, "Kabali" went on a record breaking spree in its opening week and shattered most of the top records of South Indian film industry. The Rajinikanth and Radhika Apte starrer has surpassed almost all the benchmarks set by "Baahubali: The Beginning," which owned all the records of Southern cinema. But the movie has failed to beat some records. We bring five of them to you. Continue to see them below:
1. Highest grossing Indian film in opening weekend in US
"Baahubali - the Beginning" collected $4,423,339 (Rs 28.07 crore) from 236 cinema halls at the USA box office in the first weekend. It is the highest grossing Indian film in the U.S. market in the opening weekend. "Kabali" received bigger response than "Baahubali" in premieres and opening day, but could not maintain the same momentum at the ticket counters on the following days. The film collected $3,616,002 (Rs. 24.33 crore) from 240 screens at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend.
2. Hindi-dubbed film to join the club of Rs. 100 crore movies
The Hindi version of "Baahubali: the Beginning" collected Rs 120 crore nett at the Indian box office. It has become the first dubbed movie in Hindi to enter the club of Rs 100 crore movies. Considering its pre-release hype, "Kabali" was expected to do better business than Baahubali. The Rajinikanth starrer got a bigger opening than the Rajamouli-directed movie, but failed to surpass even the mark of Rs. 50 crore nett.
3. All time highest grossing south Indian movie in India
"Baahubali - the Beginning" has collected over Rs. 520 crore at the Indian box office in its life time and become the all time highest grossing South Indian movie in the domestic market. "Kabali" has collected over Rs. 200 crore at the domestic box office. Its present trends suggest that it may not even cross Rs. 300 crore mark in its life-time.
3. All time highest grossing south Indian movie in worldwide market
"Baahubali - the Beginning" has grossed over Rs 650 crore at the worldwide box office in its life time and it is the highest grossing southern movie in the global market. "Kabali" has collected more than Rs. 300 crore at the global box office in 17 days and its current pace shows it will not be able to surpass the Rs. 500 crore mark in its life time.
5. Highest grossing South Indian movie in the USA
"Baahubali - the Beginning" has grossed $7,514,643 (Rs 48.28 crore) at the USA box office and these numbers also include the collection of its Hindi ($4,87,292/Rs 3.20 crore) and Tamil versions ($567,227 / Rs 3.63 crore). Kabali has collected $4,150,324 (Rs. 27.73 crore) at the U.S. box office in 17 days. When compared to its opening week, its screen count has been reduced by 95 percent in its third week. There is no sign of the film beating the life-time record of the Prabhas starrer.
