Karthi's Kaashmora (Kashmora) has registered better collection than Dhanush's Kodi at worldwide box office in the first weekend and topped the global collection chart for south Indian films this Diwali season.
Kaashmora and Kodi are the most hyped and highly-anticipated Tamil movies of 2016. Both the films, also dubbed in Telugu, had huge amount of hype and promotion before their release. The trade Pandits in Kollywood were keeping their finger crossed over which of the two would lead the box office chart during the Diwali weekend.
Karthi and Dhanush's movies started with a bang in Tamil Nadu on Friday and the strong word-of-mouth helped them show good growth on Saturday and Sunday. But the latter had an edge over the former at the ticket counters. Kodi and Kaashmora collected Rs 15 crore and 12.50 crore, respectively, at the TN box office in the first weekend.
Kaashmora has also made brilliant collection in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. The movie has collected approximately Rs 11.10 crore gross in these regions in the first weekend. On other hand, the business of Dhanush' film is not up to the expected mark in these areas. Kodi is estimated to have collected over Rs 6.5 crore in these regions in its opening weekend.
Kaashmora has also collected Rs 8 crore at the overseas box office in the first weekend. Its area-wise breakup is Rs 3 crore in the US, Rs 12 lakh in Canada, Rs 14 lakh in the UK, Rs 86 lakh in the UAE, Rs 9 lakh in France, Rs 64 lakh in Malaysia, Rs 34 lakh in Australia, Rs 2 lakh in NewZealand and Rs 2.75 crore in other international markets.
The Dhanush-starrer has also done good business in the international markets, but failed to beat Kaashmora. Kodi has collected approximately Rs 4.5 crore gross at the overseas box office in the first weekend. Its area-wise breakup is Rs 42 lakh in the US, Rs 26 lakh in the UK, Rs 62 lakh in the UAE, Rs 12 lakh in France, Rs 65 lakh in Malaysia, Rs 23 lakh in Australia and Rs 2.25 crore in other international markets.
Kaashmora is estimated to have collected approximately Rs 31.60 crore at the worldwide box office in the first weekend. On other hand, Kodi has grossed over 26.50 crore at the global box office in its opening weekend. Both the Tamil films have raked in approximately Rs 58.1 crore gross in three days.
