The group stage of the Junior Hockey World Cup came to an end yesterday with England booking the final place in the quarter finals by thrashing Canada 6-0. The quarter finals stage of the tournament is set to start tomorrow.
Pool A
Australia and Argentina qualified from Pool A with Australia topping the group undefeated. Blake Gover was the star performer for Australia as he managed to get a goal in all three group matches. Argentina had a shaky start to the tournament drawing and losing their first two games. They needed a win in their match against South Korea to qualify and they did so quite easily as they managed a 5-1 win.
Pool B
Belgium topped Pool B winning all their matches followed by Netherlands who needed to defeat Egypt in their final match to reach the quarter finals. Belgium boasts the best defense in the tournament so far conceding only two goals. Whoever plays Netherlands in the next round will have a tough time against them as they managed to score 16 goals in the group stages; more than any other team this tournament.
Pool C
Germany, the second favourites to win this tournament topped Pool C followed by Spain in second place. Germany narrowly edged past Spain and New Zealand 2-1 in their first two matches followed by a 6-1 thrashing of Japan. Spain and New Zealand actually finished level on points but Spain qualified to the quarter finals because of superior goal difference.
Pool D
Tournament favourites India topped the final pool unbeaten like the other teams that topped their group. Striker Mandeep Singh has been India's star performer so far this tournament scoring two goals including the winner against South Africa in the final match. England were the last team to qualify for the quarterfinals after they defeated Canada 6-0.
