Without taking a note of the Delhi High Court's order to not take any coercive measures against the Jawaharlal Nehru University's student, Umar Khalid, the university has denied him to submit PhD papers on Monday, till their plea was heard again on Tuesday.
According to Umar Khalid, the university has refused to accept his PhD thesis along with the thesis of another two students. The news was confirmed by Umar on his Twitter handle where he wrote, "Shocking disregard & violation of court by JNU admin. Despite categorical instructions of the Delhi HC against any coercive action, JNU admin has blocked on the last day, PhD submissions of me and two others. The reason cited by them - non-compliance to punishments of the HLEC!"
Notably, Khalid was among the three students who were held by the Delhi Police in connection with the 2016 event that was organised within the premises of the campus. In the event, the anti-national slogans were allegedly raised by a few students, including Khalid.
After a high-level enquiry committee (HLEC), the university found him guilty of indiscipline and the panel had rusticated him for one semester with a fine of Rs 20,000.
Background
As the chief proctor denied to give him clearance to submit the PhD papers, Umar went to the court again on Monday afternoon.
"I wasn't allowed to submit my PhD, saying I have not given the fine imposed by the enquiry committee. But we have challenged it in the high court and there is already a direction to not use coercive action against students till the next hearing," Khalid told Hindustan Times
He then registered an application in the HC requesting the court to direct university to allow him to submit his PhD. After hearing his request, the court allowed him to submit his PhD, specifying that the last date of submission that was Monday would not be valid for him.
Umar went to the administration again but despite the instruction from the court, the chief proctor refused. "I will fight this case even if I have to go to the Supreme Court," he added.
