The Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) terrorist has been gunned down by security forces in Sofi Hamam locality of Sopore town in Jammu & Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday.
The encounter that broke out between the security forces and the militant, holed up inside a house in Sopore's Chankhan area, early on Wednesday morning lasted for nearly six hours.
"The body of the militant has been recovered and he was affiliated to Lashkar," PTI quoted a police official as saying. The security forces have also recovered arms and ammunition from the house he was hiding in.
The joint operation by Indian Army and the Jammu & Kashmir police began after receiving intelligence inputs that the two terrorists including the outfit's commander Abu Huzaifa are hiding in a house in Chankhan.
The forces surrounded the house where the LeT militant was hiding. The militant opened fire at security forces on being challenged thus triggering an encounter, according to IANS report.
Security forces had cordoned off the areas surrounding the encounter site to avoid casualties. No one has suffered injuries in the ongoing battle.
