Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under the worst flood to have hit the state in nearly six decades, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it a 'National Calamity'.

More than 170 people have reportedly lost their lives in the floods so far, and thousands continue to be stranded, even as rescue operations by the army, Air Force and the National Disaster Response Force are in full swing.

The Jhelum River continues to breach embankments, flooding hundreds of villages, submerging roads, wiping out phone connectivity and hampering rescue operations.

Pictures coming from across the state show residents in dire situations as they remain trapped in flood waters.
