An Army Colonel was killed on Tuesday in an encounter with militants in Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday, reports said.
Colonel Santosh Mahadik, who was the commandant of 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), was critically injured in a gunfight with separatist guerrillas in Wanigah forest area of Kupwara district.
The officer died after he was airlifted to the army's base hospital in Srinagar. He was leading the operation against the guerrillas from the front when he was injured, the police told IANS.
A constable of the special operations group (SOG) of the state police was also injured in the operation, while he was helping to evacuate the senior army officer.
The security personnel reached the area after reports of armed guerrillas hiding inside Wanigah forest.
