A Sashastra Seema Bal jawan was killed and six others were injured when they came under attack from terrorists in Zakura on the outskirts of the Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar on Friday evening. The injured jawans have been admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
"Seven SSB jawans have been injured in a terrorist attack near the CRPF camp in Zakura while they were returning from duty," SSB Inspector General Deepak Kumar was earlier quoted as saying by local reports.
That the attack took place near a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp has given rise to speculations that the terrorists' primary target could have been that structure.
The Press Trust of India quoted local sources as saying that the attack began when the militants fired at the vehicle of the patrolling party while it was returning home. According to reports, three companies of the SSB were returning to the CRPF camp in Zakura after the end of duty when the terrorists opened fire.
The area of the attack has been cordoned off, while security forces are now conducting search in the region for the militants.
