Sooraj Pancholi was on Tuesday remanded in police custody till 13 June in connection with the suicide of his girlfriend actress Jiah Nafisa Khan.
Sooraj was arrested on Monday evening on charges of abetting actress Jiah 'Nafisa' Khan's suicide. The action was taken after Jiah Khan's mother Rabia Khan submitted a six-page letter allegedly written by her daughter, in which the actress had revealed her "troubled" relationship with Sooraj.
A police team arrested Sooraj around 5 pm at his residence on Monday. The cops registered an FIR under the IPC's section 306 (abetment of suicide) and produced him before a Mumbai court on Tuesday.
The court remanded Sooraj in police custody till 13 June after magistrate Seema Jadhav rejected Zameer Khan's (Sooraj's lawyer) arguments in the court that the six-page note did not name Sooraj and was not signed by Jiah.
In the letter, Jiah accused the aspiring actor of physically and emotionally abusing her. She wrote, "I can't eat or sleep or think or function. I am running away from everything. The career is not even worth it anymore. When I first met you I was driven, ambitious and disciplined. Then I fell for you, a love I thought would bring out the best in me. I don't know why destiny brought us together. After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn't deserve this."
"You destroyed my life. It hurt me so much that I waited for you for ten days and you didn't bother buying me something. The Goa trip was my birthday present but even after you cheated I still spent on you. I aborted our baby when it hurt me deeply. You destroyed my Christmas and my birthday dinner when I came back. When I tried my hardest to make your birthday special," she continued.
Initially, media reports suggested that Jiah committed suicide due to lack of film assignments. However, her mother rubbished the reports and said that the actress hanged herself due to her "troubled" relationship with Sooraj, who is the son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.
Jiah made her acting debut with Ram Gopal Varma's controversial film, "Nishabd" in 2007. She also starred in Aamir Khan's "Ghajini" and Akshay Kumar's "Housefull", after which she stopped acting in films for about 3 years.
