Jason Day claimed his fourth victory in six starts and surged to the world number one ranking after going wire-to-wire to win the BMW Championship by six shots on 20 September.
Right now theres no one on this planet thats better than me, thats pretty cool, out of all the golfers that are in the world playing right now that Im the best, its such a good feeling. Thats kind of what I was thinking back when I was a little kid but to be able to do that, it doesnt, I cant really think about it, I dont know, it feels surreal right now that I just still feel like what I did yesterday or the day, you know, before that, Im still a regular guy that is really good at hitting a golf ball, Day told reporters afterwards.
The Australian closed out his tournament with a two-under-par 69 to finish at 22-under 262 at Conway Farms, six clear of American rookie Daniel Berger (69) in the third of the PGA Tours four FedExCup playoff events. American Scott Piercy was third at 15-under with Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and JB Holmes sharing fourth at 14-under.
It is the seventh tour win for Day, the fifth of the season after winning the Farmers Insurance Open, the Canadian Open, his maiden major at the PGA Championship and the opening playoff event, The Barclays, prior to this triumph. Day becomes the third Australian to reach world number one, following Greg Norman and Adam Scott.
To be able to represent Australia today was great, and the people that had involvement in me getting to where I am today, I cant thank them enough, Day said.
He now heads to the 30-man, season-ending Tour Championship in top spot on the FedExCup points list, ensuring a win at East Lake Golf Club would see him claim a $10m (£6.44m).
