Lewis Hamilton, who started the race from the second position in the grid, was in a superb driving form as he emerged triumphant in the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday. It was a one-two for Mercedes as team mate Nico Rosberg, who started in pole position, finished second.
Hamilton was aggressive in the Suzuka circuit as he overtook Rosberg early on in an aggressive manner after which there was no looking back for the defending Formula One champion. Hamilton was happy with the result and thanked the team for working hard.
"The team has done a fantastic job this weekend. It's great to be back up here with a one-two. I had a great start. Thanks again to the team for working so hard to make sure we get good starts this race," said Hamilton.
With the Japanese GP victory, Hamilton is gradually inching closer to the F1 title as he stands atop the charts in the standings table. The Japanese GP triumph was Hamilton's eighth victory of the season.
Sebastian Vettel, who looked impressive in the qualifying session, could not come up with his fifth Japanese GP title, as he had to satisfy with a third place finish.
Vettel was also overall happy with his performance at the Suzuka circuit. The German was pleased to be on the podium once again.
"It's great to be back on the podium here, it's, I think, my favourite race; I love the track, I love the fans, I love the trophies. Unfortunately, I didn't get the bigger one today; it was close with Nico. I think we had a chance but it's always easy with hindsight. Overall, I think it was a fantastic race. The start was very tricky and it was interesting to see those two fighting in the first corner - obviously I could benefit - but, yeah, all in all, very happy with the race today," said Vettel.
Vettel's Ferrari team mate, Kimi Raikkonen was fourth in the race. Williams' Valtteri Bottas finished fifth after starting the race in third position in the grid.
Force India continued with their impressive performance in the Japanese GP as Nico Hulkenberg was the sixth driver to cross the chequered flag. It was a huge achievement for Hulkenberg considering he started the race in the 13th position.
