A witness has captured dramatic video of an aftershock in the city of Kumamoto, following the powerful earthquake that struck south-western Japan on Thursday (14 April). An earthquake of magnitude six hit brought down buildings, killing at least nine people and injuring hundreds, local media said.
The earthquake is the strongest to hit Japan since the one that triggered the Fukushima disaster in 2011, although on this occasion the nuclear regulator reported no problems at power plants.
The initial tremor struck seven miles east of the city of Kumamoto, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). It said the magnitude was 6.2 but later revised the figure down.
There was no tsunami warning, but one person was killed after being crushed by a collapsing building, and another by a fire that broke out after the quake. At least 400 people have been treated at local hospitals, public broadcaster NHK said.
