Pakistan on Thursday violated ceasefire along the Line of Control in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of a woman in the Nowshera — also spelt Naushera — sector. Another person has been injured in the attack, and is said to be undergoing treatment.

The deceased has been identified as one Akhtar Bi, while the person injured is her husband Mohammad Hanief. The Indian Army retaliated in kind, leading to two Pakistani soldiers being injured.

Local reports said the ceasefire violation is continuing in the Nowshera sector, with Pakistan having resorted to firing 120-mm shells — which have the capability to pierce armours. Security has been beefed up in the area, and people may be evacuated in case the need arises.

Army sources have been quoted by some reports as saying that the ceasefire violation by Pakistan started at 10:30 pm on Wednesday, May 10, in the Sher Makedi area in the Nowshera sector along the LoC. The Indian Army retaliated with appropriate firepower. However, since then the truce violations have continued intermittently throughout the night and well into the morning.

Pakistan had also violated ceasefire in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir early last month. Even then the Indian Army had retaliated with appropriate response, silencing the Pakistani guns.

Ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC have become a regular feature these days, and in a recent instance Pakistani Army soldiers mutilated the bodies of two Indian jawans after killing them. The incident led to a huge uproar in India, with people demanding vengeance for this action.
