Curfew was imposed in seven police station areas of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu & Kashmir, on Sunday, May 28, after top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat in an encounter on Saturday, May 27.
Protests broke out in several parts of the state on Saturday shortly after security forces killed Bhatt, the "successor" to slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, in an encounter in Saimu Tral sector in the state's Pulwama district.
The incidents come just a day after the army neutralised two terrorists from the Border Action Team (BAT) of the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC). The terrorists were trying to infiltrate into India through the Uri sector in Jammu & Kashmir's Baramulla district when they were killed.
"Curfew will be imposed tomorrow in seven police station areas of the city as a precautionary measure," said Farooq Lone, District Magistrate (DM), Srinagar. Lone said the curfew will be imposed in Khanyar, Kralkhud, Maharaj Gunj, Maisuma, Nowhatta, Rainawari and Safakadal.
The official also added that all the educational institutions in the state's capital will remain closed on Monday.
"The admit cards of students appearing in CET and other competitive examinations tomorrow will be treated as curfew passes," Lone said. "The staff posted as invigilators can use their identity cards for reaching the centres and back home," he added.
Meanwhile, authorities in Ganderbal district imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the region, restricting movement on people. Section 144 empowers a magistrate to issue such orders in urgent cases apprehended danger.
"In view of the prevailing law and order situation and to avoid any damage to public and private properties, Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed within the territorial jurisdiction of Ganderbal district with immediate effect till further orders," Ganderbal DM Tariq Hussain Ganai said.
The DM of Anantnag, Abid Rashid, said the restrictions on people's movement will be placed in the district on Monday (May 29), too, to prevent loss of life in view of the prevailing situation.
