An army patrol party in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district was fired upon on Thursday.
It is not clear if there are any injuries or casualties.
The terrorists opened fire on the army patrol, after which an encounter ensued. At least two terrorists are reportedly holed up in Shopian and a search operation is underway, ANI news agency reported.
According to the Kashmir Reader, the militants ambushed the soldiers when they were patrolling the Koungnoo village in Shopian.
The incident comes a day after a sub-inspector was killed in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
Militants fired at the state police's Special Operations Group (SOG) on Wednesday as the police were looking for the mastermind of the Udhampur terror attack who was believed to have been holed up in the Dachina village.
Sub-inspector Altaf Ahmad was injured in the attack and succumbed to his wounds.
On Monday, four Indian Army jawans were killed in a gun battle with terrorists in Handwara.
