At least three Indian soldiers were killed in an encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Machhal sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon.
The Northern Command of the Indian Army tweeted saying that the body of one soldier was mutilated.
"#JKOps 3 soldiers killed in action on LC in Machhal. Body of one soldier mutilated, retribution will be heavy for this cowardly act @adgpi," the tweet said.
Heavy firing is still going on along the LoC, according to media reports.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has been briefed about the situation by the Army.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Indian Army and the state police had neutralised two terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district and also recovered new Rs 2,000 currency notes and some weapons from them.
A jawan from the Border Security Force (BSF) was killed in cross-border firing in the Rajouri sector of the state on Monday.
This is a developing story.
