In the 30-second clip, posted to Twitter by local news anchor Robert Harianto, an explosion occurs just a few metres outside a Starbucks coffee shop in Sarinah mall. In the wake of the attacks, Starbucks issued this statement:
The Indonesian capital has been rocked by multiple explosionsand reports of gun battles on the streets, with police reporting that four attackers are among the six confirmed fatalities so far. It is still not known who is behind the attacks, but National police spokesman Anton Charliyan has said that terror group Islamic State (Isis) had issued a cryptic warning ahead of them.
There were at least 14 attackers involved in the attacks, and a manhunt is under way, the Jakarta Post is reporting. According to AP, Indonesian police are claiming the terrorists imitated the Paris attacks, in which gunmen and suicide bombers murdered 130 people.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has condemned the attacks, saying on Metro TV:
Our nation and our people should not be afraid, we will not be defeated by these acts of terror, I hope the public stay calm. We all are grieving for the fallen victims of this incident, but we also condemn the act that has disturbed the security and peace and spread terror among our people.
Indonesia has been a victim of several bombing attacks in the past, claimed by Islamic militant groups. The country has been on high alert after authorities said they had foiled a plot by Islamic militants to attack government officials, foreigners and others.
