Many women MPs of India, including Meenakashi Lekhi, Jaya Bachchan, Poonam Mahajan, Kumari Selja and Supriya Sule, will attend the BRICS' event, titled Women Parliamentarians: The Enablers for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Jaipur on Aug. 20.
India is hosting a total of 42 women parliamentarians from member countries of BRICS — Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa — during the two-day event, in which participants will discuss ways to achieve sustainable development goals. The women parliamentarians from the BRICS nations arrived in Jaipur on Aug. 19. The VIP lounge at the airport was upgraded to receive the international delegates.
"A total of 42 delegates from the BRICS countries are attending the meeting which will have different plenary sessions on August 20 and 21," Prithvi Raj, the Secretary of the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha, said today.
The United Nations had held a summit on sustainable development goals in September 2015. Leaders across the world had adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which has 17 SDGs to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change.
Some of the topics expected to be discussed at the event in Jaipur are the role of women parliamentarians in achieving sustainable goals, gender empowerment and sustainable development, increasing women's leadership and participation, and others.
The event will be inaugurated by the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. BJP MP Poonam Mahajan will address the inaugural session.
Meanwhile, the BRICS Smart Cities conference was held in Jaipur on Aug. 17. BJP MP and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje gave a keynote address on Friday.
