Priyanka Chopra's latest outing "Jai Gangaajal" (also spelt "Jai Gangajal"), released in theatres March 4, showed decent growth at the Indian box office Saturday.
"Jai Gangaajal" is a sequel to the hit action drama "Gangaajal", starring Ajay Devgn. Priyanka Chopra's association with director Prakash Jha had created lot of curiosity among film-goers before its release. The movie, which was released in 2,684 screens in India and 300 screens overseas, was expected to start with a bang.
But the Priyanka Chopra-starrer opened to average response with its occupancy ranging between 30 and 40 percent on the first day. "Jai Gangaajal" collected Rs 5.50 crore at the Indian box office on its opening day. The movie failed to beat the records of Priyanka's "Mary Kom" and Prakash Jha's "Satyagraha", which had raked in Rs 8.40 crore and Rs 11.21 crore, respectively, in the domestic market on their first day.
"Jai Gangaajal" received mixed reviews from the audience and critics, but many lauded Prakash Jha and Priyanka Chopra for their work. The word of mouth took its business upward, with the film witnessing around 20 percent growth in its collection Saturday. The action drama has collected Rs 6.25 crore nett at the Indian box office on its second day.
"Jai Gangaajal" has collected a total of Rs 11.75 crore nett at the Indian box office in two days. Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh â€tweeted: "#JaiGangaajal Fri 5.50 cr, Sat 6.25 cr. Total: ₹ 11.75 cr. India biz. (sic)"
Early trends show "Jai Gangaajal" has witnessed further growth Sunday, with its collection on the day expected to be much bigger than that of Friday and Saturday. The movie is likely to inch closer to or cross the Rs 20-crore mark at the domestic box office in the first weekend.
