It: Chapter Two release date is almost a year away but fans will be delighted to know that the sequel to 2017's It is bringing the Ritual of Chüd on the big screen. Film's screenwriter Gary Dauberman recently talked about the ritual and how film's director Andy Muschietti has visualised it.
While speaking with CinemaBlend, It: Chapter Two's writer Gary Dauberman spilled beans about the infamous ritual that was presented in the much-acclaimed book. Dauberman told the site that The Ritual of Chüd was an important part in Stephen King's book and they had to bring it onto the big screen.
"That stuff is difficult to balance, but because [director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti and I] worked with each other before, when I'm writing pages and all that stuff it becomes more of a conversation and less like, 'Hey, here's what I did.' It's sort of organic; it's really kind of just chipping away at the stone and trying to find the most focused, accessible way into some of the more metaphysical aspects of that book," he said.
He further talked about the visual representation of the ritual and how "Andy would kind of go off and think about Chüd and how he wants to visually represent all that stuff. He just came up with some brilliant, brilliant stuff... It really is going to be amazing."
So, what is The Ritual of Chüd? Well, in Stephen King's book, the Losers were able to defeat Pennywise the Clown in both the timelines. Basically, the ritual is a battle of wits and wills — a staring context mixed with different riddle challenges. The word, Chüd, is close to a Tibetan word, Chöd, which means to cut. The said practice uses extreme fear as a method for the realization of Enlightenment. Participants will willingly visualize terrifying scenes and even place themselves in frightful environments to prove the greatest fear response is possible.
In the It story, Bill Debrough first battle Pennywise with the Ritual with the advice that was given to him by Maturin. All the members of Losers club believe that the metal silver has supernatural abilities and now since they believe in it, the thought becomes real and is represented as a pivotal weapon.
Starring Bill Skarsgard, James McAvoy, and Isaiah Mustafa in the lead roles, It: Chapter Two will hit the theaters on September 6, 2019.
