Serbian forward Dejan Lekic has become the latest acquisition of Indian Super League (ISL) champions Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) this season, and he comes on as a replacement for injured defender Josemi.
There have been question marks over the attacking line of ATK this season after Iain Hume didn't put in a very consistent display upfront, especially after marquee player Helder Postiga was stretchered off in the inaugural match this season.
However, the hat-trick from Hume for ATK in the match against Mumbai City FC on the first day of this month changed it all. And now, Antonio Habas is looking to further strengthen the attacking line, and Lekic might have come to the rescue.
The 30-year-old lanky striker is a former Serbian Cup winner with Red Star Belgrade, and also has a total of six goals from 64 matches in the La Liga in his career so far. In the Danish Superliga as well, he has a total of 12 goals from 27 games.
Lekic has shone with his goal-scoring prowess for sure in leagues across Europe, and it needs to be seen now if he continues it in the ISL, or maybe even take his shooting boots a level higher.
Meanwhile, another news that is set to bring a big smile among the Atletico de Kolkata fans is Helder Postiga is confirmed by Habas to be in action once again in the ISL.
"Postiga will definitely add the enthusiasm to the side after our good performance yesterday against Kerala Blasters FC [where ATK won 3-2]. He has recuperated well and will hopefully be in action very soon," said the Atletico de Kolkata head coach in a release on Wednesday.
"I am also looking forward to Lekić, who seems a good prospect for the team, and is also expected to join the side soon," said the Spaniard.
According to IANS, the Portuguese international is set to join the ATK squad tomorrow, on Friday, and might be seen on the bench as the Kolkata side takes on Delhi Dynamos at the JLN Stadium in the national capital on Saturday.
"We welcome Hélder Postiga back to the squad. His presence on the field was felt during the very first match of this season, where he scored two beautiful goals," said ATK co-owner Sanjiv Goenka.
"Also, the red-and-white fans in Kolkata will be able to watch his moves closely as we have back-to-back home matches lined up after our last away match against Delhi Dynamos FC. We are looking forward to some brilliant football from Dejan Lekić, who will add fervour to our front and increase goal-scoring opportunities." said Goenka, also the chairman of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group.
