Chiyaan Vikram's much-awaited "Iru Mugan" has got a good opening and has become the second biggest opener in his career. On the first day, the Tamil movie has made a notable collection although the film garnered mixed reviews.
"Iru Mugan" had managed to generate a good hype and this factor helped the movie to register above 60 pecent occupancy in theatres on the first day. The morning and evening shows reportedly enjoyed good occupancy at the key centres.
The mega-budget flick was released in over 400 screens and it is a good number for a Chiyaan film, say trade experts. The film has grossed Rs. 5.5 crore on the first day.
The fans of Vikram expected "Iru Mugan" to set a new benchmark at the box office. But it has failed to beat the records of Rajinikanth's "Kabali," Ajith's "Vedalam" and Vijay's "Theri", which had collected, Rs. 21.05 crore, Rs. 15.05 crore and Rs, 13.5 crore, respectively in Tamil Nadu.
Vikram's hit film "I" had raked in over Rs. 8 crore on the first day and this remains his best performance in Tamil Nadu till date. His previous film "10 Endrathukulla" had collected about Rs. 5 crore in the state.
However, the good sign for the movie is that the advance booking for the weekend shows in Chennai is getting fantastic response. "This is best advance bookings for #ChiyaanVikram after #I. Weekend Spl 9am shows moving pretty fast. #IruMugan @auraacinemas. [sic]" Rakesh Gowthaman, the MD of Vettri Theatres, tweeted.
"Iru Mugan" is an spy thriller, written and directed by Anand Shankar. Shibu Thamnees has produced the movie, which stars Nayanthara and Nithya Menen as the lead actresses. It was simultaneously released in Telugu as "Inkokkadu."
