Manila Mavericks ended the Singapore leg of the inaugural International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) on a high, beating table-toppers Indian Aces 25-20 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The win enabled the Mavericks to jump up to the second spot, within three points of the Aces, who are on top with 20 points from six matches.
Mavericks' Mark Phillippoussis comfortably defeated Cedric Pioline 6-4 to give the hosts a two-point lead. But World No. 5 Ana Ivanovic, of Indian Aces, continued her run of good form to down Kirsten Flipkens 6-2 and put the Aces ahead.
In the mixed doubles match, Daniel Nestor and Kirsten Flipkens put Mavericks in front again with a 6-2 demolition of Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza.
Mavericks continued the momentum with men's doubles pair of Treat Huey and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga thumping Bopanna and Gael Monfils 6-2.
In the men's singles, Monfils edged out Jo Wilfried Tsonga 6-5 to close the gap but it wasn't enough for Aces to win the tie.
In the second match of the day, hosts Singapore Slammers notched up their second straight win in the IPTL, beating UAE Royals 27-25 in a close contest.
Women's World No.1 Serena Williams produced an influential performance for Singapore, edging out Caroline Wozniacki 6-5 in the opening match of the tie, and then teaming up with Tomas Berdych for a 6-4 win in the mixed doubles contest.
Goran Ivanisevic cut the deficit for the Royals after defeating Patrick Rafter 6-4 in the battle of the legends.
But Berdych pushed Singapore closer to victory with another 6-4 win over Marin Cilic in the men's singles match, setting the scene for the crucial final set.
In the men's doubles, Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios suffered a 6-5 defeat to Cilic and Nenad Zimonjic, but Singapore still remained two points ahead in the final tally.
