The wait is finally over. The 15th edition of Indian Premier League is set to kick start in its rejuvenated form on March 26, and the first clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders will be nothing less than a treat to watch.
The brand-new edition is garden-fresh as two new franchises, new format, updated rules and re-shuffling of players amongst franchises are few of the aspects which makes IPL 2022, better than its previous forms.
The first clash will take place at iconic Wankhede Stadium on coming Saturday, while the next day will be a double header as Delhi Capitals will lock horns with Mumbai Indians as day opener and Punjab Kings will be up against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Total 74-matches will be played in the tournament and each and every team will play 14-games in the league stage. The new format as follows-:
New format:
The ten franchises will play 14 league matches each (7 home and 7 away), , followed by the 4 playoff matches. Each team will play 5 teams twice and the remaining 4 teams only once (2 only home and 2 only away).
Example:
Group A- Mumbai Indians (5 titles, 6 finals), Kolkata Knight Riders (2 titles, 3 finals), Rajasthan Royals (1 title, 1 final), Delhi Capitals (0 titles, 1 final), Lucknow SuperGiants (0 titles, 0 finals)
However, the division of franchises between two groups will not affect the points table as the franchises will be in the same tally and the top four after the end of league games will qualify for the playoffs. The teams who finish at top 2 will get two chances to enter the final as they will play Qualifier 1 & 2. And the teams placed in 3rd and 4th spot will play Eliminator round to enter Qualifier 2 to lock horns with the team that lost Qualifier 1.
Venues
70 league games to be played across four venues – Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
Wankhede Stadium - will host 20 games
DY Patil Stadium - will host 20 games
Brabourne Stadium - will host 15 games
MCA International stadiums- will host 15 games
Notably, a decision on the venue for the playoffs is yet to be notified.
