Carlos Brathwaite muscled four sixes in a row to hand West Indies a thrilling win against England in the final of the ICC World T20 2016. That was not all, before his heroics with the bat, he also added three crucial scalps to his name, which made things even more difficult for England.
The talented West Indies all-rounder lit up the finals at the Eden Gardens and he has grabbed a lot of attention after that.
Brathwaite was roped in to be part of Delhi Daredevils at the IPL 2016 auction earlier this year and the franchise is extremely happy to have him on board.
The CEO of the Delhi Daredevils Hemant Dua feels that Brathwaite can rebuild the hope of the fans and in return, they will come in numbers to support the team during the IPL 2016.
"Any kind of performance by a cricketer who plays for your franchise helps to bring in the confidence back. What he did was not easy to do under pressure on a platform like a World Cup final. Such a performance will definitely help the fans regain the lost. It's good to bring those people back in the stadium," Dua was quoted as saying by PTI.
Delhi Daredevils management engaged themselves in a heavy-bidding war for Brathwaite against the Kolkata Knight Riders during the IPL 2016 players' auction. That raised a lot of eyebrows so as to why will someone want to pay a hefty amount for someone like Brathwaite, who has been in the West Indies for just about a year now. Dua explained why Daredevils bought the right-handed all-rounder.
"I don't call it vindication. Any athlete can be a performer on his day. It was his day. We went in as a franchise. We saw talent and spark and that's why we bought him," Dua said.
Delhi Daredevils have failed to impress their fans for the last few years now and it is high time they run things around in the forthcoming season of the IPL. They do have some talented players in their ranks and Dua is hopeful that players like Brathwaite, JP Duminy, Pawan Negi, Mayank Agarwal, Zaheer Khan, Shreyas Iyer and others will be able to make an impact straightaway in IPL 2016.
"If we look at the West Indies side, there was not a single match-winner. There was a Chris Gayle, a Lendl Simmons, a Marlon Samuels, everyone performed. That's how we expect it in Delhi Daredevils," Dua added.
"It was Brathwaite's day and he performed. Similarly there will be (Pawan) Negi, Chris Morris, Mayank Agarwal or a Shreyas Iyer performing for the team."
