It seems Intel is working on a modem chip for Apple's upcoming devices scheduled for 2016. Is it for the much-hyped iPhone 7?
According to a report by VentureBeat, a team of 1,000 employees at Intel are working hard on 7360 LTE modem chip for Apple's device, which is likely to be the iPhone 7. It went on to claim that Apple may dual-source the LTE modems from Intel and Qualcomm.
The website went on to say that Intel CEO Brian Krzanich recently hinted a possible collaboration with Apple by saying that "7360 modem will start shipping by the end of the year, and that new products using the chips will begin showing up next year."
However, it is not confirmed if Apple has officially signed a deal with Intel.
Apple is yet to reveal anything about its upcoming flagship device but it is expected to be unveiled in September next year by the time the iPhone 6s completes one-year cycle in the market.
According to a report by Geek, Apple has ordered for parts of iPhone 7 and mass production of the processor could start in next March. It went on to claim that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has secured an exclusive supply contract for the chips.
The iPhone 7 is expected to come with features like flat LCD screen, six-element lenses, water and dust proof, wireless charger and a complete metal body. DigiTimes has reported that Chi Kuo of KGI Securities had claimed in a note to investors on Apple's plan to make its upcoming iPhone, possibly the iPhone 7, between 6.0 and 6.5 mm thick.
