The hype around Apple's upcoming flagship smartphone dubbed as iPhone 6 refuses to die down with media extensively covering the device as its release date draws near. The new smartphone is expected to have several features superior to its predecessor, iPhone 5s.
Apple Inc. must be looking forward to make good business from its new device after not-so-good sales of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Here are features of iPhone 6 that are expected to be superior than the ones in its predecessor, according to reports that have surfaced so far.
Processor: iPhone 5s is powered by Apple A7, while its successor is expected to be powered by 20-nanometer A8 chip (64-bit). Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has started production of Apple's processors that are making way to assembly plants, according to Apple Insider, which cited a report from Hong Kong.
Operating System: The new iPhone will run on the recently released iOS 8, while iPhone 5s runs on OS 7, which is upgradable to iOS 7.1.2.
Display: iPhone 5s sports a 4.0-inch display with 640 x 1136 pixels resolution (326 ppi pixel density). However, Apple is expected to release two variants of iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch display. The smaller variant will come with a 1920x1080p (440ppi) resolution, while the bigger model may feature a 2272×1280 (510ppi) resolution, according to KDB Daewoo Securities.
Screen: iPhone 5s has a LED-backlit IPS LCD, capacitive touchscreen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and oleophobic coating. Its successor iPhone 6 is expected to have scratch-free sapphire crystal glass screen and oleophobic coating with water resistance.
Camera: Both versions of iPhone 6 are expected to have an 8MP camera, which is seen in its predecessor, but it may have other upgrades in flash and Optical Image Stabilization.
Battery: iPhone 5s has a non-removable Li-Po 1560 mAh battery, while the 4.7-inch model of iPhone 6 may come with a 1,800 mAh battery and the 5.5-inch model may have a 2,500 mAh battery, according to a report by Forbes (via Mobile.it168)
It is also reported that the new Apple device will have several value-added features. Chinese analyst Sun Chang Xu revealed that the device might feature sensors that can detect pressure, temperature and humidity. It may also feature low temperature polysilicon in-cell touch panels, Touch ID fingerprint security, NFC and metal casing, reported Apple Insider citing analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Apple Inc. is tight-lipped on the release date of its upcoming device but several reports have claimed that it will be unveiled in the month of September. German website, ApfelPage has claimed citing leaked internal documents of German wireless carrier Deutsche Telekom that the device might be unveiled on 19 September. Macrumors also reported citing a source that the device might be announced in the first or second week of September, and will hit stores a few days later.
