World's maiden International Day of Yoga was celebrated with great zeal across the globe and people in India enthusiastically participated in several events organised across the nation, including in New Delhi where Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed asanas at Rajpath on 21 June.
Over 37,000 people had gathered at Rajpath to take part in the World Yoga Day celebrations along with Modi. In the guidance of Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and instructors, both the PM and the public performed asanas (postures) and pranayams (breathing exercises) on Sunday.
Delhi Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, who are in stand-off over administrative power in the national capital, also took part in the Yoga Day celebrations at Rajpath.
Ahead of the Yoga practice, Modi addressed those gathered at Rajpath. He expressed his gratitude to the United Nations for dedicating 21 June as the International Yoga Day.
"I thank the @UN and the Nations of the world who co-sponsored the resolution to mark this day as International Day of Yoga," he tweeted.
"This is a programme for Manav Kalyan, a tension free world and a programme to spread the message of Sadbhavana," he further wrote in another tweet.
While Prime Minister joined the people of Delhi at Rajpath, President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the mass Yoga event at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking this day in the Indian history.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje and several other ministers participated in the events organised across India.
Even the United Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, participated in the celebrations of World Yoga Day at Rajpath.
The Naval officers at INS Viraat and CRPF personnel in Srinagar too participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations.
