The International Anti-Corruption Day is observed by the United Nations every year on 9 December. The theme for 2014 is "Break the Corruption chain", which aims at highlighting how corruption affects every phase of the democratic system and results in world-wide instability.
"Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law and creating bureaucratic quagmires whose only reason for existing is the soliciting of bribes," the UN Said in a statement ahead of the event.
The event came into existence after the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption on 31 October 2003 and also designated 9 December as International anti-Corruption Day in order to raise awareness of corruption around the world.
