The first Test in Rajkot, when they fell four wickets short of a win must look like a distant dream now for England. Since that Test match, India have gone on to win three Test matches in a row, wrapping up the series with a game to play. That match will be played in Chennai from Friday.
India have bounced back from that Rajkot scare quite brilliantly, outplaying England in all departments in the three Test matches that followed. The pace bowlers have given Virat Kohli wickets when he needed it, the batsmen, led by the captain himself, have stepped up, while the lower order batting has been India's real strength.
With the spinners doing what they always do in home conditions, India have just been too strong for England, who, despite competing really well at times, have just had no answer to Kohli's and co's relentless pressure.
They need to find one for the fifth Test match in Chennai. The batting is a problem for England, with Alastair Cook in need of a big score, while Joe Root really needs to strike a big hundred in this series.
Not since Rajkot have either of them breached the three-figure mark and considering these two are England's two best batsmen, they really must be making bigger scores than they have against India. Moeen Ali could also use an innings of real worth, while Ben Stokes will hope he doesn't fall prey to R Ashwin again.
England's spinners were bowled to the ground in Mumbai after Cook and coach Trevor Bayliss made the wrong decision with the playing XI, and while that looks like being corrected for the Chennai Test, the captain will hope Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali deliver more wickets.
Rashid is England's leading wicket-taker by some distance, but he needs to find more consistency with his bowling. Too many times in Mumbai, Rashid eased the pressure off the India batsmen by bowling a bad delivery.
India will know they have England on the ropes and they will look to be professional and ruthless in Chennai. With Kohli keen on making it 4-0, expect India to go hard at England from ball one, be that with the bat or ball.
The toss has not proved to be too crucial so far in this series, with India winning two of the Test matches despite Alastair Cook calling right. But, with rain expected to be around, the toss could prove to be vital in Chennai.
Winning the toss, however, doesn't guarantee a win as this series has shown time and again and England will know they really must step up a few levels in all departments of their game if they are to compete with this high-on-confidence India side.
