India is seeking a ban on an 'anti-Islam' movie streamed online following a request from the Jammu and Kashmir government condemning the film for showing Islam and Prophet Mohammad in a bad light.
In what seems to be a move to prevent any unnecessary incidents in the country, the Home Ministry sent the state's request to Google to take down the web pages containing the film "The Innocence of Muslims".
"The DG CERT-In is looking into the matter and in all probability the WebPages will be blocked soon," a Home Ministry official told Press Trust of India.
Made in the US, "The Innocence of Muslims" triggered anger among Muslims and was said to have led to the killings of American ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans earlier this week in the anti-US protests in Libya, the news agency said.
The protests also spread to other parts of the world, where in the Egyptian capital of Cairo demonstrators attacked the US embassy on Tuesday. Thirteen people were said to be hurt in the violence.
A similar attack was carried out in Yemen, where on Thursday protestors galled the US embassy compound in the Sanaa capital, leading to at least 15 people getting injured.
Concerned with the anit-US attacks worldwide, the J&K government strongly admonished the film and said that such movies would trigger law and order problems in the state.
"Such video clips cause great anguish among the peace loving citizens and posting of such video clips on the Social Media and Networking sites is not acceptable in any society and the government is making every effort to ensure that such video clips carrying blasphemous content are blocked and removed from the cyberspace," a state government spokesman said, according to IBN Live.
Fearing the possibility of such happenings in the state, Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Tuesday asked Muslims to strongly protest against the screening of such films which are offensive to Islam.
"I appeal the people of Jammu and Kashmir to protest against this act. We want to send this message across that Muslims can't tolerate anything against the beloved Prophet Muhammad. We cannot remain silent over this," Geelani said according to The Indian Express.
Following the recent violence in the Middle East, the government has also tightened security of the US embassy in India and its four consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad.
