He was appointed as the coach in June 2016, but was not given a contract extension. The BCCI has also invited applications for the top job putting Kumble's extension under a cloud.
A number of former cricketers have thrown their hat in the ring for the coveted job in world cricket. Virender Sehwag and Tom Moody are top favourites if Kumble doesn't get an extension.
After the BCCI decided to invite application, a lot of rumours came to light. Reports suggested Indian players are not happy with Kumble's working style.
The Cricket Advisory Committee, which comprises of Indian stalwarts, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who chose Kumble as coach last year, are entrusted with the job of finding a new coach.
The trio is not keen on removing Kumble from his position as it would look foolish on their part as India have been done well under his tenure as India coach.
The CAC had asked for more time to take a final decision and they have their task cut out. On one side, they have the most important man in India cricket, Virat Kohli, who, reportedly is not happy with Kumble. On the other, Kumble's success with the Indian team in 12 months cannot be ignored.
With Kumble given an option of continuing as coach till West Indies series, the CAC have some time to take their decision. Will it be Kumble or some new coach? Time will tell.
