Vijay's "Theri" is set to reach an important milestone on the day when Rajinikanth's "Kabali" hits screens. Ilayathalapathy's flick will complete its 100 days run in theatres on July 22. Coincidentally, both the movies are produced by Kalaippuli S Thanu.
"Theri" hit screens on April 14 on the occasion of Tamil New Year. The movie was released in over 1200 screens worldwide and had opened to mixed reviews. On the first day, the Kollywood flick had minted Rs. 28.96 crore and ended its four-day weekend at Rs. 85.36 crore worldwide.
Atlee Kumar's film had Samantha and Amy Jackson in the female leads. The movie tells the story of a sincere cop, who gets into the bad books of the villain for killing his son. The struggles the police officer faces and how the hero responds to the situations form the crux of the story.
"Theri" is the highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2016 till date. So far, the movie has collected over Rs. 150 crore worldwide. The movie is still being played in a few screens in Tamil Nadu and it will reach the 100-day mark on July 22.
On the other hand, Kalaippuli S Thanu formally announced the release date of "Kabali" on Monday, July 11. The producer tweeted, "#Kabali will be releasing worldwide on 22 July 2016 !! We couldn't be more excited @superstarrajini @beemji :) [sic]"
The sheer coincidence of "Theri" reaching the 100-day mark and "Kabali" releasing on the same day have excited Kollywood movie goers. Especially, fans of Rajinikanth and Vijay have welcomed the news and they are all set to create trends with multiple hashtags on July 22.
"Kabali" is expected to hit screens worldwide in four languages (Tamil, Telugu, Malay and Hindi). The screen count of the film is expected to be easily above 3500. The industry insiders predict the Rajinikanth-starrer to beat the records of "Theri."
