Ian Somerhalder's directorial debut has won him rave reviews from fans who praised the actor for an amazing episode that exposed the dark sides of some beloved characters such as Candice Accola's Caroline and Kat Graham's Bonnie.
But one thing they weren't happy about was the absence of Damon-Elena scenes in the episode titled "The Downward Spiral." A quick scan of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook reveal that a number of Delena fans were disappointed that Somerhalder kept the two on-again off-again lovers apart all episode.
The episode saw Damon struggling to find ways to rescue his mom from the prison world, and Elena spent most of the episode persuading Caroline to turn on her humanity and greive her mother's death.
But Delena fans, who haven't yet given up hopes for a Somerhalder-Nina Dobrev reunion, were expecting some romantic moments between the two.
Check out a few Twitter reactions below:
Since Nian is no more, Delena is all I'm holding on to. SO CAN THERE PLEASE BE AT LEAST ONE FRICKIN DELENA SCENE IN EACH EPISODE THX #TVD

While it's true Somehalder did not pen the episode and that he might not be responsible for keeping the two lovers apart, there have been rumours of Somerhalder and Dobrev's desire to limit their screen time together.
Although Somerhalder and Dobrev -- who dated for three years before calling it quits in 2013 – were friendly post their break up, his romance with "Twilight" actress Nikki Reed is said to have made things uncomfortable for the couple.
Since then, the couple's scenes have been limited and in a recent interview Somerhalder even hinted that Damon and Elena might not make it.
"I don't think that's absolutely going to happen, but I think they're trying," Somerhalder told TVGuide when asked if Delena will make it. "The situation is very intense and it's hard. But you definitely see [him putting in effort] and you don't always see that side of him. So, that's cool."
"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays on CW.
