An airman of the Indian Air Force (IAF) committed suicide at the Tambaram Air Force Station near Chennai on Wednesday night. An inquiry was launched into the matter on Thursday.
The 23-year-old allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun at the air force station premises located on the outskirts of Chennai, Defence and Police officials told the Press Trust of India (PTI).
"It is a case of suicide. An inquiry is on," a Defence official said adding that the airman committed suicide by using a firearm.
the police told the news agency that the body of the deceased airman was shifted to a government hospital on Thursday.
Airmen are deployed on ground-based jobs in the IAF.

In October 2016, an IAF officer was found dead with a gunshot wound at the Sirsa airbase in Haryana. The IAF suspected that the officer, Wing Commander RK Tiwari, committed suicide. His body was found at his quarter in Sirsa airbase.
