A 5-year-old girl is on ventilator support and her mother is in a serious condition after an alleged drunk driver rammed his car into the duo at Pedda Amberpet on Gandhi Jayanti. The driver and his two friends, who were in the car, surrendered to the police on Monday evening.

Sanjana and her mother Sridevi, 36, have been admitted in two different hospitals after the incident. Sridevi suffered multiple fractures. Sanjana's 8-year-old sister,  Pravallika, survived the incident as she had crossed the street when the car rammed into her family.

"I was starting to cross the road holding my daughter's hand. We were still by the side of the road when the car hit us," SV Sridevi told the Deccan Chronicle.

Sanjana was reportedly dragged by the car for metres before it stopped. Sanjana was rushed to the hospital immediately after the accident.

Venkatramana, a software engineer, and two of his friends were in a Hyundai Santro drinking, eyewitnesses said. They had abandoned the vehicle and run away after the accident and the police has found bottles of alcohol and food inside the car, NDTV reported. The car reportedly came from Vijaywada.

"We found a water bottle filled with a liquor like substance inside the car. There were also eatables and disposable glasses, which indicates they were drinking," said SI G. Manmadha Kumar.

"There were three people in the car. They were coming from Vijayawada. Special teams have been dispatched to hunt them down," a senior official said before the suspects handed themselves over.

The Santro car with the number AP 29 N 5799 was in the name of Suneetha Rajulapudi.
