Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India's (HMSI) Activa scooter is the all set to add a feather to its cap. The best selling scooter is also the best selling two-wheeler in India for the past seven months. The strong sales indicate Activa will become the best selling two-wheeler in India in 2016 beating the 17-year-monopoly of motorcycles.
Riding on the Activa range, HMSI now commands 59 percent market share in the scooter segment. The Japanese manufacturer has a significant lead over its rivals Hero MotorCorp and TVS Motor Company, which currently have 17 percent and 14 percent share respectively, in the scooter segment.
In July this year, Activa sales have reached all time high since start of sales in 2001 to stand at 256,173 units in domestic market. In a year, Activa sales have increased by 2.27 lakh units, compared to 19,910 units cumulative increase of nearest competitor in Jan-July 2016, a company statement said. The gap in leadership is at all time high of 58,413 units in July.
HMSI had also pipped Hero MotoCorp in scooter exports in the last financial year. The company shipped 1.03 lakh scooters, up 32.68 percent from exports in 2014-15. In the process, HMSI overtook Hero MotoCorp that managed to export 77,521 units in 2015-16.
Honda Activa, a household name in the scooter market, also breached 1-crore-mark sales last year. It is the only scooter that has crossed the magic number in the country so far.
