Honda Activa, the household name in the scooter market, added a new feather in its cap by breaching the 1 crore sales mark. It is the only scooter that has crossed the magic number in the country.
A runaway success for Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), Activa was launched in 2001 and sold over 55,000 units that year. The scooter went on to become the market leader in just three years and the sales graph saw a steep rise subsequently. HMSI has said it sold over 2.1 million units in the financial year 2014-15.
Expressing delight on this milestone, HMSI president & CEO Keita Muramatsu said: "This achievement is more significant since Activa has gained the trust of one crore happy families in India. From reactivating the scooter segment in India in 2001 to leading the Scooterization of industry today, Honda's iconic Activa has changed the way Indians ride to fulfill their dreams. We thank our valued customers and families who have made Activa the most preferred choice of families for commuting in India."
Initially launched with a 7bhp 102cc engine, Activa got a mild facelift in 2009 with a new 8bhp, 109cc engine. In 2013, Honda brought Activa-i with a mild change in design. Last year, Honda introduced 125cc iteration of the scooter christened as the Activa125.
All these models helped Honda sell larger volumes. In June 2015, Activa became the top selling two-wheeler in India with 1,96,913 units sold.
HMSI claims to have a 59% market share in the scooter segment.
