"Holiday- Soldier is Never Off Duty" is all set to beat "2 States" collections soon.
Akshay Kumar's film has minted ₹97.08 crore at the Indian box office and is nearing the ₹100 crore mark. The film will soon surpass Arjun Kapoor-Alia Bhatt's "2 States" collections, which amount to ₹102.13 crore.
"#Holiday [Week 2] Fri 4.40 cr, Sat 6.34 cr, Sun 8.77 cr, Mon 3.18 cr, Tue 2.97 cr, Wed 2.73 cr. Grand total: ₹ 97.08 cr nett. India biz," film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
If "Holiday" beats "2 States", the action entertainer will emerge as the second biggest grosser of 2014, after Salman Khan's "Jai Ho", which still tops the list of highest grossers of this year.
"Holiday" will be the actor's third film to enter into the ₹100 crore club. "Rowdy Rathore" and "Housefull 2" have already joined the elite club.
The success of "Holiday" should bring in relief for Kumar, whose last release "Boss" failed to impress the audience. Khiladi Kumar had three releases last year – "Special 26", "Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara" ("OUATIMD") and "Boss." The first film was critically acclaimed and did decent business at the box office. However, "OUATIMD" and "Boss" did not perform well and managed to mint only ₹61 crore and ₹54.15 crore as lifetime collections, respectively.
The actor has managed to bounce back with "Holiday", which is doing good business in India as well as in the overseas markets. The film hit the screens on 6 June and received mixed reviews from critics. However, audience seems to have given thumbs up for the action flick, directed by Murugadoss.
"Holiday" is a remake of Tamil film "Thuppakki", which grossed more than ₹100 crore at the box office. The director has struck gold once again with the Kumar starrer, which is his second venture in bollywood. Murugadoss made his directorial debut in Hindi industry with "Ghajini", starring Aamir Khan and Asin. It was "Ghajini" that started the ₹100 crore trend in 2008 after which several films have made it to the elite club.
The director will be happy that his second directorial venture has also turned out to be a success. He is currently busy with a Tamil project titled "Kaththi", starring Vijay and Samantha.
Post the completion of "Kaththi", Murugadoss is all set to return to bollywood and commence his third project. The film, touted to be a women centric action entertainer, will have "Holiday" heroine Sonakshi Sinha in the lead role. Details about the film's complete cast and crew members are yet to be revealed.
