When one talks about India hockey greats, it is impossible not to include the name of former captain Mohammad Shahid among those influential figures. After the Shahid took his last breath on Wednesday, high- profile personalities flooded Twitter with rich tributes, reflecting the popular player he was during his days.
After being initially treated in the SSL Hospital at Banaras Hindu University, he was shifted to a hospital in Gurgaon. But the situation could not improve much, and the legend was in critical condition over the last few weeks.
The situation took a turn for the worse, as he slipped onto coma last night. He was even put into a ventilator, but was declared dead on Wednesday morning. Despite the sports ministry's medical grant of Rs 10 lakh, and support from his employers, Indian Railways and well-wishers, he died at the age of 55 in Gurgaon.
He was one of the best forwards in Indian hockey history, and his dribbling skills can never be forgotten. Beside these skills, he had some incredible pace and was a sight to behold when he was running forward with the ball.
