A widely shared image of US president Barack Obama posing next to a mile 69 marker is a hoax and should not be taken seriously.
The image, which was shared on Twitter on 4 September has had thousands of comments and re-shares since it was posted. The image was posted along with a caption, "the leader of our country."
Even though another Twitter user @3x1minus1 later confessed that she had photoshopped the image, it still continued to be shared widely.
According to popular hoax-busting websites, Snopes, the real image shows the president standing next to a 1961 mile sign. The image was originally taken near Exit Glacier in Alaska and posted on the White House Instagram account on 2 September to show how much the glacier had receded since 1961. It should be noted that 1961 was also the year President Obama was born.
Obama visited the Exit Glacier on 1 September as part of a three-day tour to campaign for climate change, The Associated Press reported.
Located in Kenai Fjords National Park, Exit Glacier has retreated more than 800-feet since 2008.
According to a Daily Mail report, the President, during his trip emphasised that the Exit Glacier was a 'spectacular' place and wanted "to make sure our grandkids can see this."
