Swiss tennis player Roger Federer has become the latest victim of social media hoax after an article published on netlivemedia claimed that he had met with a serious accident in Madrid. The article also claimed that the former world number one player "is in a critical condition at a major hospital in the capital city of Spain."
While many believed the news, a few netizens were quick to figure it out as hoax. "Apparently the @rogerfederer accident story is a fake! #phew," tweeted Anirudh Chaudhry. A few others with verified Twitter accounts also clarified it as fake news.
Social media users claimed that the photo used by the website is from a car crash that took place on the Pan Island Expressway in Singapore. "Roger #Federer has not been injured in a car accident. It's a fake article. Photo is from 2014 car crash in Singapore," reads a tweet.
The article published on netlivemedia even quoted the tennis player's publicist Carle Canos saying that Federer met with an accident while returning from a party with friends in the early hours. "He is very serious at the moment. Doctors are doing their best as I am currently speaking," Canos was quoted by the website.
