At least 18 people were reported killed and 12 others injured when a private bus plunged into a gorge on the banks of River Sutlej in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh at 4pm on Tuesday, 1 September.
Fifteen people were killed on the spot, while three others declared dead on arriving at hospital. The injured have been admitted to Rampur Civil Hospital and another hospital in Bhawa Nagar.
The bus from Rampur was on its way to Rekong Peo in Kinnaur when the driver reportedly lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road, falling into a 200-metre-deep gorge in Nathpa, which is located near the 1500 MW Natpha Jhakri project in Kinnaur district.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has ordered a magisterial inquiry to investigate the cause of the accident and declared that Rs 25,000 will be given to the families of the deceased.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock and anguish at the accident and has offered condolences to the families of the deceased.
