At least five highwaymen gang-raped four women and murdered a 25-year-old man on the Jewar-Bulandshahr road off the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Budh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
The victims said they were waylaid by the robbers. The family of eight was travelling to Bulandshahr from Jewar to meet a relative. The gang looted cash and valuables from the family and then began sexually assaulting the women. When the 25-year-old man got in the way, the gang shot him dead.
"It's a terrible incident. An FIR has been registered. A man has been murdered. Four women have alleged gang rape. Police teams are working on the case. The women are being taken for medical examination. The post-motem is being done. Two other teams are hunting for the suspects," Love Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police of Gautam Budh Nagar was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
Jewar MLA Thakur Dhirendra Singh said, "The victim family is from Jewar. They were travelling in Eco car and going to Bulandshahr. The criminals threw something on the tyre and it got punctured. However, the driver of the car didn't stop and drove for quite a distance and stopped near a hut. As soon as they got down from the car, five criminals took the family to the fields and started looting cash and valuables and assaulting the women," he said.
Three men, four women and one child were travelling in the car. The injured were admitted to a local hospital in Jewar.
