After waging a war against beef consumption in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party now feels that momos should also be taken off India's menu saying that it causes cancer. BJP legislator and lawyer Ramesh Arora says that the mouth-watering dumplings contain carcinogenic monosodium glutamate or ajinomoto.

Arora has been campaigning hard to ban the much-loved street food. "Momos have been found to be the root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestine," Arora said on Wednesday.

But it's not just momos, the BJP legislator bears animosity against Chinese cuisine which uses ajinomoto to chemically enhance taste.

"Ajinomoto, a kind of salt, causes serious diseases, including cancer. It is responsible for converting a minor headache into a migraine," he said.

Arora says that ajinomoto induces the pancreas to excrete extra drops of insulin, causing an imbalance in the body, and prompts people to overeat as it triggers hunger. "Besides memory loss, regular consumption for two to three years causes cancer of the stomach. They are found to be more harmful than alcohol and psychotropic drugs," added Arora

Arora also met Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Bali Bhagat recently to persuade him to prohibit the sale of momos and Chinese street food in the street.

His crusade against momos be it steamed or fried has been so resolute that momo sale has come down in the Valley by 35 percent.

"Junk food has already taken a toll on our children. There is a need to awaken the people," he said.

Arora's fight is indeed legitimate as studies have proved that the salt indeed causes stomach cancer. The WHO had declared it unsafe in 2004.

Cow milk prevents cancer

Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Prabhu Lal Saini has claimed that cow milk has properties that can prevent cancer. "Cow milk is good for health. It is anti-cancer and has qualities similar to mother's milk," the minister said at the inauguration of a dairy plant in Sikar on Monday.

He had also added that milk helps in curing high blood pressure.

But Saini is not the only eminent personality to come up the medicinal properties of milk. While Justice Mahesh Chand Sharma, the Rajasthan High Court had recently said that cow should be declared the Indian national animal as it has many divine qualities, a professor of physics at Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur had claimed that cow urine was capable of curing cancer, AIDS, and a bunch of other diseases.

"There is no substitute for cow milk. We live on it. A cow is useful even after the death. We need its urine for medicinal purposes. Its bones are useful even for tantric purpose," Justice Sharma had explained.

While the credibility of these claims is indeed doubtful, what stole the show was the claim made by Vasudev Devnani, the minister for education and a BJP leader Rajasthan, Devnani had said that cow the only animal on the planet that inhales and exhales oxygen.
