Mohenjo Daro was an important and special film for Roshan for quite a few reasons. First, the star had worked hard to essay the role of Sarman, the sincere Harappan villager who travelled to an alien land on business prospects. Second, he was back on the big screen after a gap of almost two years.
Unfortunately, Mohenjo Daro failed to live up to the hype. Explaining why the film may have gone wrong, Gowariker told the Huffington Post that the film didn't meet the expectations audiences had from it.
"A section of the audience that saw the film in theatres like it. Those who saw it on television, they appreciated it too. And then there was a section of the audience who panned the film. It was because they had a certain imagination of Mohenjo Daro, which the film didn't align with. Now why did that happen? Did you know what Mohenjo Daro looked like, before the movie? No. You sat up on it after we made the film. It's about a perception and that in itself is very hard to change," Gowariker elaborated.
