Rohit Sharma applauded former India captain MS Dhoni's major contribution with the bat in the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Cuttack. Rohit suggested that someone should be entrusted with the finisher's role now so Dhoni can play freely for India.
Dhoni's batting position has a been a subject of huge debate, and the wicket-keeper batsman was asked to bat at number four. He did not disappoint, scoring 22-ball 39, which played a huge role in helping India reach 180 runs, which proved to be enough. His innings might have also silenced some of his critics, who wanted youngsters to be given a chance.
India eventually won the game by 93 runs, which happened to be their biggest margin of victory in a T20 match. Rohit feels it is ideal for Dhoni to walk into bat at number four as well.
"We can't talk much about MSD. He didn't get much batting in the ODIs but class is permanent. He is someone who's played and won so many games, so moving forward, in this format, we feel him batting at No.4 will be ideal," India Today quoted Rohit as saying.
Dhoni, since the last decade or so, has been playing the finisher's role. But, now, the team has the likes of Hardik Pandya, who can be even more devastating. The experienced man from Jharkhand has changed his game over the years, and it is best suited for him to bring all his experience and play freely.
"For a long time, MS has taken up the role of finishing and we feel it's time for someone else to do the job. MS can play freely in the middle. 180 was a great effort by the batting unit."
Now, it remains to be seen if Dhoni, who has batted at various positions in the middle order, will once again be given the role to bat at number four when India play Sri Lanka in the second T20I.
