A headless corpse of a man was discovered at Goa's Miramar beach shore on Monday afternoon. The body of the 60-year-old man, identified as Laxman Atmaram Sawant of Mapusa, was found in highly decomposed state.
According to a report by a Goa daily, post mortem reports have confirmed a case of homicide, with multiple stab marks found on the front torso of the body.
"The body was thrown in the water. It might have floated from elsewhere or the murder might have taken place on the beach," a police sources told the daily.
Sawant was missing from his residence at Tivim since Aug 8. His family had filed a missing complaint at a nearby police station the following day.
His sister, Pratibha Parab, identified his body from the birthmark on the knee and his clothes that he was wearing when he left home at around 3:45 pm.
The police recieved first information about the mutilated body at around 7:00 am on Monday through a phone call from a localitie. Apart from the head, the left arm of the body was also reported missing. Police said the body had been floating for nearly 3 to 4 days.
The police is yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. Mapusa and Panaji police are investigating the case from all possibilities and are on the look out for the culprits.
"We are investigating the death as murder. The body was identified by his wife with the help of birth marks on his body," Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar told IBNS.
Sawant, a retired employee of Sesa Goa, is survived by his wife, son and two daughters. According to reports, he was undergoing psychiatric treatment at Bambolim.
In another similar incident on Thursday, a headless body of a 37-year-old man, Basant Patra, was found lying on the roadside near his residence in Korkorapada village, Cuttack.
